The boardwalk runs for 2.5 miles from the North end of the town to 23rd Street. During the summer you can ride a bicycle or surrey on the boardwalk between the hours of 5:00 - 11:00 AM. There are numerous places to rent these bikes and surreys. New Jersey law requires helmets to be worn by everyone under the age of 17 years and recommended for all. This law does NOT apply to riding on the boardwalk, however. There is also a bike path on Haven Avenue and it runs from 9th to 34th Street. See NJ Biking and Helmet Laws.
Stores, eateries and amusements are dotted along the boardwalk with a newly renovated area from 12th - 14th Street - including new restrooms for your comfort.
Asbury Avenue, in the center of town, boasts boutique shops along with a small department store, B&B plus the new Staintons Gallery of Shops, both located at 8th and Asbury. Probably the most unique thing about Ocean City is that it is a "dry" town....you cannot buy or be served any alcohol on this barrier island. Atlantic City is 30 minutes away driving north while Cape May can be reached in about the same time going south. The average weather temperature in the summer is 81° F, (winter - 46° F, spring - 70° F & fall - 56° F).
Occasionally we do have rain, but we have many things to do just in case. In fact, these activies are great if you just need or want to keep out of the sun for a day or so.
Activities in Ocean City
Being on the beach either sunbathing or swimming is the number one fun thing to do. Biking and surrey riding on the boardwalk until 11:00 AM are also right up there as great things to do. There are playgrounds scattered all over this island, a public golf course at 28th and Bay, an excellent library and community center at 17th and Simpson which has just had its reopening ceremony. There are two great locations with basketball and tennis courts for the "never grow old" crowd. Shuffleboard courts can be found behind the beach at 5th Street.
Miniature golf courses can be found on the boardwalk along with a waterslide, amusements of all kinds, movie theaters, shopping and lots of food. If you want, there is a great zoo just 20 minutes away and it's free...and then there are the casinos in Atlantic City for the "big kids".
For your information, there are two hospitals very close by - Shore Medical Center in Somers Point and Cape Regional Medical Center, formerly known as Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, in Cape May Court House. There are also excellent Shore Care and Atlantic Care facilities in both Ocean City and Somers Point.
