Principle of the sentinel operation:

 


The lymphatic fluid, that drains from the tumor to the first lymph node and might carry tumor cells, is stained by a blue dye and/or radioactive material, thus marking the first lymph node (called sentinel node). In a small operation this node will be identified, removed and examined. Theoretically all lymph nodes should be free of tumor if the sentinel node doesn`t contain tumor cells. In that cases removal of the lymph nodes could be spared
